I have used a microwave for a very long time but I have never tried using it to bake a cake. I think that would not be a good way to go because of the way a microwave cooks and I have never seen any recommendations for using the micro for baking cakes.

This is a simple question to answer.

Older microwave ovens cannot be preheated.
Modern combination mocrowave ovens can be preheated.
So If you have an old micro bin it.
Get a new one.

I have a Sharp microwave, baking cake is a piece of cake, so to speak.

The cooking is done by using a combination od oven and micro.
Dead simple.

the microwave startes working as soon as the transmitter starts up. You can't preheat a microwave, because the second you turn it off to pop the cake in, the transmitter stops. Then the process has to start all over.
