I was given a pc that has NT and want to switch to XP, can I just reformat?

Yes. A clean windows XP installation formats the hard disk. Also depending on what NT version it has you have an option of upgrading without formating the hard disk so you can keep the previous settings and files.

i think if you try this there will be a right crach you can install windows xp on the pc ,put the win xp ,cd in the drive restart the pc then it will boot off the cd ,then your see 3 options you go for the 3rd option ,
leave everything as it is then hit the enter key & win xp will install and your files& drives will not be gone

Boot into DOS and run Format C:\ then restart with the xp bootable disk in the drive.

To be absolutely sure of a clean install, I would recommend uninstalling NT, then install XP.

yeah u can after sum serious upgrades 4 you processor, RAM, and hard drive...basiccally upgrade everything..lol
