I am asking because my husband popped what he thought was a zit and it smells bad

It's a combination of natural oils and the acne bacteria. If the pore is deep, it can smell because it's been there a long time. It's not healthy to pop them because it can scar and also spread the bacteria under the skin.

I have never heard of a regular zit having objectionable smelling pus. Perhaps an infected boil could produce that situation. I would advise him to watch the area VERY closely for any sudden red streaking, more offensive pus or anything else that seems to be abnormal. An abcess, if I'm not mistaken normally isn't on the skin surface, so be very careful as to avoid a septic infection (infection of the blood) which when left untreated can be fatal in some cases. Hope this helps.

Believe it or not, there are different types of "zits". When a "zit" or pimple become infected, the whitish/yellowish substance that oozes out is called pus. The pus can be a combination of bacteria, dead cells, and sebum. The "bad smell" is probably a result of a chemical reaction that bacteria produces when it is exposed to oxygen (after it is popped). I do not think your husband should worry about it unless it comes back worse, then see a doctor. After a pimple is popped, wash the skin with anti bacterial soap and put some neosporin on it with a bandaid.

Its puss, and no is should not smell bad... if he as an abcess, now that will stink!
Question, why is your husband sniffing zits? Try some Sea breeze or Witch hazel on the zits after he popped it.

inside of zits are dirt and oils trapped inside of pores, if there is a strong odor it may be a boil and not a zit as you may have thought. then it is pus. you can buy boilease at any local store in the medicine isle. good luck always

the pus in a zit is dead body cells that have given up their own life fighting the stuff trying to infect your body.
they work by eating the foreign cells then dying, it also kills the cells that are inside them.
it's normal for the gunk to smell bad.
