Interesting - I always thought they did it to announce that they were a member of the smokers club and attract attention to how cool they were about to become as they burned the linings of their lungs and hastened their own death...

As a smoker the only reason I tap the cigarette pack is to remove all loose tobacco and it makes them light easier.

Fine but why do people obsessively pack their cigs 20-30 times? Isn't 3-4 times enough? It is so annoying to witness a nonstop packer.

Good question! For 25 years I smoked and for 25 years I "packed" or tapped my smokes and even today I really have no idea. Maybe a habit?

to compress the tobacco into the cigarette. This is done to prevent the lit part from falling off when flicking the ash.
As Cigarettes travel the tobacco becomes looser within the cig itself, so after lighting there is less holding the lit part in. A good shake, a good flick and poof off goes the lit part into your lap, car floor, carpet, shoe.

"Packing" Cigarettes compacts the tobacco and provides an even burning cigarette. Also by compacting the tobacco it seems to light easier and offers more of a nicotine punch. At least that's my own experience.

when i was a smoker, i would tap my cigs, to pack the tobacco in the cigs so when i smoked it it would smoke better without a lot of air while smoking it. i also thought it tasted better by doing that.
but that is my opinion, if you don't smoke don't start, it can be a very expensive stinky habit,
