I got a 5 month old kitten over a month ago and my dog just seems scared of it. The first couple weeks the dog would follow the kitten around and it seemed interested. Now, whenever I get home the cat starts to pounce on the dog and play with the dog but my dog just sits there. My dog will then start barking at the cat and jump in my lap and the dog will begin to shake somewhat. I don't know what to do.

You didnt mention that they are fighting or hurting one another, just sounds like a kitten being a kitten and a dog being a bit timid about it all. I wouldnt worry about it too much. Just sit with both of them and pay equal attention to them. If your dog has not been exposed to kittens (or even cats) in the past, this can be overwhelming to him. Kittens are very active and an 11 year old dog is starting to settle down. Just remember your dog will let the kitten know when he has had enough, and as long as the dog doesnt get out of hand I would not punish him for it. Animals do learn, and you dog will teach the kitten he is the boss soon enough.

On another note.. okay declaw the cat, and then have the dentist rip out all of your teeth and the manacurits rip all your nails out......seriously, that is the wrong answer...... There are a lot of vets now a days that wont even consider it, they now use the capping method which is much more humane.

You need to spend some time with the two of them, on the floor, playing, coaxing, and reassuring. Start petting your dog first, since he was around first, then reach over and start petting the kitty while talking reassuringly to the dog.

I suspect they may have gotten a little rough while you were gone one day. I urge you to keep them separated (until they get to know each other better) while you are gone and then do as suggested above for a few days.

DO NOT DECLAW! Declawing is like someone yanking your fingernails out. I have never, ever, ever declawed any of the many, many cats I have had.

First of all i must say getting you pet acquainted to good grooming habits is an excellent suggestion, after all it's a pet but be careful when clawing if you don't know how i suggest you take it to the professionals they have the right tools to do the job and if the claw is not filed properly it would shred,
secondly you need to allow both pet's see that you are not giving all your attention to the other, so in that case you need to include booth in whatever games or affection you show, you don't stroke your cat without stroking your dog, bad news! you don't hug your cat without hugging your dog etc.
learn to love both equally otherwise you would have a cat and dog showdown both fighting for your attention, find games that can include both, cat's love ball's dog's do too, i sure you get the drift if the dog does something wrong don't shout at him because he's bigger but criticize constructively with a gentle tone of voice, hey your cat's on your lap get your dog up next to you don't be afraid! it simply means of course that you would have to groom him more regularly so what ensure you shampoo him at least once a week don't shampoo every day you would damage his skin twice a week would not hurt but ensure to include more oil in his diet, and that should do the trick.

Don't declaw the cat, its cruel. Just give the dog some more time. It is hard to get use to having someone else around.

DO NOT DECLAW ANY ANIMAL......VERY CRUEL. The kitten may have given the dog a fright. Introduce a game that both can play ..persevere!

Declaw your cat. You don't want your dog's spirit broken right? This is what it sounds like - the kitty is getting the better of your poor dog.
