Keep silence. And no body will notice your stupidity.

After a while, people will think of you as a sage-like person, if not a smart person.

It depends on how you view the meaning "SMART"

"Smart" could be of anything. It could be getting all As in an exam. It could be you answering back wittily. It could be having extremely creative ideas. It could be scoring very high in IQ test.

To sum things up, I believe "determination" is the most crucial thing to be smart, regardless of any form of "smartness" mentioned above.
You can have the best brain to get all As, play around with words, come up with creative ideas, and so on; but if you are not determine and do not fully utilise or leverage on your intellectual ability and further develop it, at the end of the day, another person lacking in intellectual ability but full of determination, might surpass your intellectual ability and this is when someone is smarter than you.

I have two answers.

One comes from a wonderful history prof I had a few years back. He said that without a strong basis in history, it's impossible to be an educated person in any area; and that with a good knowledge of world history, you're already well on your way to being smart in any area. I have to agree.

The second is my favorite quote, from Aristotle: "The mark of an educated mind is the ability to entertain an idea without accepting it."

Passion and lots of common sense. Know the subject well. Asks, when you do not. When doing something, put in 110% efforts; making sure that it is a product you and others will be proud of. Inter-personal relationships (getting along with everyone) is important. When you can, help others. By helping, you teach and you learn. Live a happy life, be positive at all times :-)
