I'm an evangelical Christian and I relate to people just fine. The difference is some people try to influence others by preaching at them and some do it by just being an example to people in their everday life. I can relate very well to mainstream people, sometimes I can relate better to them than I can other Christians. I don't really think I'm odd either...eh, my friends say I'm crazy though so who knows I guess I maybe am! (I know, I completely contridicted myself there!)

Dude, I don't think all of us evangelicals are out of the "mainstream." If you're referring to the evangelicals who think God is a Republican and that only Republicans can love God, I think you've got a point. But I'm one evangelical who has divorced myself from the GOP for several reasons, but I'm more than happy to tick off the Democratic leadership by being pro-life and pro-gun. So much for stereotypes. :-)

Peter says this: "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people to be his very own and to proclaim the wonderful deeds of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." (I Peter 2:9)

Although he meant that we were a "special" people, we quite often are considered peculiar. This is because we live as Pilgrims and sojourners in this world. We want little to do with it, and can't wait to put on our heavenly bodies.

Another reason we are considered odd, is this: "They insult you now because they are surprised that you are no longer joining them in the same excesses of wild living." (I Peter 4:4)

You needn't worry though. We shouldn't be around much longer.

What gets me is that the media just loves to portray them all as oddballs. But if you were to meet a lot of the evangelicals outside of church, there are LOT of them you could not tell from meeting them that they belonged to an evangelical church.

So, please don't think that the people you see in the news are representative of all evangelicals!

I think its a little pretentious for any of us to think we decide what is and isn't the mainstream. I will say this, study up..."mainstream" (what the majority believes) isn't (sit down for this) what the media says.

There is a difference between religious people and Televangelists...

All the TV and radio religious people are crazy. If you want religion, then read a book.
