Castillian Spanish is the official language in most of Spain. As someone else has pointed out, there are many other Spanish dialects. In Catalunia (which is the province surrounding Barcelona), the Catalan language is spoken and is taught in the schools along with Castillian. It has many similarities to French as well as Spanish. Mexican is quite different in vocabulary and in slang expressions but is similar in structure to Spanish and can mostly be understood by people from Spain, much like an English speaking person from the United States or Canada can understand most dialects from England but not the extreme slang.

People from Spain speak Spanish and people in America speak English. Mexican and American are not languages, they are nationalities.

It is not stupid to ask what language is spoken in Spain. To ask if it is English, well, that is a different matter, hee, hee.

Actually, there are several languages spoken in Spain. The most common is (spelling?) Castilian, which really sounds very funny to the Mexican people. I know this because my daughter, Cuban-American, went to Spain in the Air Farce, and deliberately chose to use the Castilian accent. When she visited us in Mexico City, those Mexicans really laughed at her, just as we laugh at Aussies...

There are a number of small groups who speak different languages, such as the Basques, etc.
