The key is to be a good listener. When you pray stop your internal dialog for a while and wait, concentrate on being thankful for what you are about to receive perhaps if your mind keeps wandering repeat something like Hallelujah over and over. After the amen, continue with your day but keep the door open anticipating communication with Him but not pushing and upon reflection on your day you will notice He has spoken to you. Treasure it store it up and unlike your material belongings you can take that treasure with you.
Read your Bible as if it was written to you. Read a letter like Ephesians as if it were a letter you received from your best friend, at first from beginning to end, then on another day again, and then again until you see the flow, understand the main message and how the thought processes all fit together because each one was a letter written with a purpose and so to understand them understand it was written to you from a friend long ago living in another culture and you will want to know about that place where the letter was written and in your research you will begin to be very interested and begin to know the heart of God. The Gospels are different. First read through just the red letters several times , and then circle in to the story and who that individual author was writting to and what their relationship to Jesus was eventually after reading them each or just one through a few times you will know Jesus form the red and then the author and the relationship and then the history and finally the message.
There are plenty of help books once the works have spoken to you. Remember these references (study Bibles, in depth comentaties, concordances books on the culture of the time) all are written by mere men who might have their own agenda but stay true to that God who speaks to you everyday and understand all other teaching under that tutor, because He is in tune with you and your path, and your specific destination.
Pray in the morning listen all day, read when you have time and study as you go. The journey will be forever rewarding and you will help not only yourself but everyone you touch. I think it's more like he's in touch with you. I heard somewhere that a prayer goes much further than a dollar. Being a better person and recognizing the ten commandments as a basic rule. I don't think people get brownie points by pretending though. Whatever makes you a better and more respectable person. If you are really bi-polar you might look into making some healthier changes in your diet. Healthy body or temple healthier mind?

Praying is not all.
You can pray and act horrible.
Being humble, Living a life with respect for yourself and others, loving yourself and the world, living a life with no fears, lies, or hate, understanding others, helping others, all these things can keep you more in touch with God, try it! and Pray but, with truth within. Some people go to church on Sundays and act horrible the rest of the week, doesn't make sense right?
Smile, be happy and live a good and a simple life

Pray continually throughout the day. You can do this through saying short prayers or just have an open prayer all day. It is a great way for God to speak directly to your heart as well.
Great question, by the way!

I feel connected to God, whenever I find someone less endowed than me... in health, in wealth, in happiness. Not in a negative way at all. I feel that here I have an opportunity for me to reach out to them and, through them, to God.
I should admit that a strong message runs through me whenever I find dissatisfied with life. The flashing message is:
" I cried for my second pair of shoes till I found a man with no legs at all" It is such a strong one

Lots & lots of prayer. In I The.5:16-18, it says
Be joyful always: pray continually :give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Jesus Christ. And in II Peter 1:5-7 it says
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith, goodness; and to goodness, knowledge, and to knowledge,self-control; and to self-control, perseverance;and to perseverance, godliness;and to godliness ,brotherly kindness;and to brotherly kindness, love.
There are so many verses in the bible that will help you draw closer to the Lord with a deeper understanding of how we are to conduct our life as a believer. That would be my suggestion to you, I hope this helps my friend.
Lord Bless
