8 hours is the absolute maximum you should study in a day (24/3 8 sleep, 8 class/life, 8 study). The most efficient would be a max of 6 hours a day. You are taking too many units if you need more than 6 to keep up.
Drop some classes in that case.
Study as much as you need to. If you have time left for friends, your true friends will be willing to hang out for the little time you have left in your day.
You may not be getting enough sleep if you aren't absorbing sufficient information for 5-6 hours at a time. Get better sleep and you will be able to absorb more in class and thereby study better.
Good luck. The best friends will stick with you, so don't worry.

The good old "work smarter, not harder" applies to studying, too. It doesn't really matter how much time you spend, what matters is how much you get done. Do you read everything for the next day? Do you complete all your papers two days before you have to turn them in? If you miss your friends, spend an hour with them in a study group.

My best advice is to turn off all music, close the door, ignore the phone and other distractors, and do 2-3 hours of efficient homework every day (take a break every hour). That's what I did and I got into an Ivy League school.

It depends on what you are studying and how much you need to learn to get "up to speed." It depends on how effective your studying techniques are. If possible, team up with some other students to meet as a study group once a week. You each can tell what you have been getting out of the class and raise questions that you have. That way you will get more out of the individual time you spend studying, and you will advance your social life as well.

No, I suggest 24 hours per day of studying. Then, only then, will you be worthy of being called a human being.
