i find that wen i talk to people about myself and whats in my head they seem to just say 'yes i understand' but they really dont they just brush it off coz its easier to agree with someone than say 'no i dont understand'. this makes me feel so lonely and pathetic. does anyone else have this problem?

Sure, this has happened to me before and honestly, I know I have been the person at times saying "yeah, I understand" to friends when really I don't.

Now I try to let them know that while I may not understand their problems, or ever be able to understand what they are going through, I am happy to listen to them and support them as best I can.

Don't feel pathetic about it, find someone you can trust to talk too.

yeah i know exactly what you mean! but you know what, i just quit telling people things altoghether..i mean, what's the point of telling them when they won't understand jack anyway? ...so i just keep things to myself now, i don't even bother talking about certain issues with other people. it's like their brain's shut off, and they can't understand what your saying, lol.

on the other hand, i will talk openly with someone who is going through the same things i am---the ones that can actually relate to me are the ones that understand the most....

I think that all the time. Most times though, I don't want anyone to understand me. I only want to be heard. If I can explain clearly what I'm thinking, I understand myself. That's what matters to me.
I agree with what you said about people telling you they understand when they don't. It shows they weren't listening to what you said.

Yeah, that's why I don't say it unless I've really been there myself. I say, "I know you're having problems right now, and if you need any help you can come to me, day or night, whatever the reason." And then I ASK THEM if they want a hug, a cup of tea, or a free meal.
We don't need puppets saying what they think we want to hear, we want a pair of ears that listen and a heart that can make us feel safe.

everyone has their own inner problems. it is best to just believe that people want to help you. They aren't saying they understand to brush you off. They want you to feel accepted. Some people are just more comfortable as pacifists than starting something they can't finish.
