A lot depends on the size and where on your body you are getting it. Some places are more painful than others (top of foot, under arm, neck, scalp, anywhere close to bone). For me the best way I describe it is like a continuous bee sting. The largest tattoo I have to 8 hours done in one sitting. I feel that if it is something you want bad enough, you don't notice or are more willing to sit through the pain and endure. Ink on it gets better with each one.

When I got mine the outline had a burning feeling - when I got it colored in it didn't hurt - could of been because I was numb from the outlining.
After when it was healing it didn't hurt at all - my husband had his done at the same time as me by the same guy - he said getting his did;t hurt at all but the healing afterwords was painful- so the best I can tell you is everyone is not the same I have also been told it depends on where you get it at.
If you are thinking of getting one make sure its something you really want - the day after I got mine I was wishing I hadn't but to late

To me it felt like a cat scratching me. I have heard that certain parts of the body will hurt worse then others. A co worker just had on one the top of her foot and she said it was the worst. I've also heard under your arm or any part of your body that has a sensative spot is bad. I had mine put on my shoulder but asked that they not go near any bone, I had heard going over bone was bad too. The needle will sometimes get stuck...? BUT, it wasn't as bad as I expected and have gone back to have the first one I had (and only) redone to look cleaner since the new inks came out. I had mine done way back in the day.

Well, me personally it doesn't hurt I have 5 of them but the first one I got it was a little uncomfortable that's all, it's nothing to afraid of. Once they finish it it might burn and swell a little but that's about it. The burning will stop in about an hour, and the swelling takes a few hours to go down, and you will know when it's healing because it will starts to itch , but don't scratch rub it ,and keep it moisturized with whatever kind of lotion the tattoo shop tells you to use. I love my what I call it body art.

it depends on the person and on the body part being tattooed. it hurts more if it's skin over bone, and less if there is more flesh on the area. i've seen people sleeping while getting tattooed, and i've seen others screaming. for me, it was like scratching. it hurt, and it was both worse and better than i expected. it was bearable. i didn't cry and i didn't scream, and i was able to look at it. but it was the worse pain i've felt till that point, or at least in a close tie with waxing.

I got my tattoo in germany while in the ARMY , i was of course nervous at first , but when it was being done , i thought why did i get myself worked up over this .
It kinda feels like 5 to 6 needles circleing around in your skin ( not bad ) , kinda like the tingle feelign you get when your foot falls alseep ... after wards it felt like i had fallen ion pavement and got road rash . after a week maybe it was nothing . do not scratch it during it's healing period as that will remove the color out and/or leave marks . overall, it was nothing . woudl get another one if i could decide which one to get . no problem ....

Like something sharp scraping against your skin. It is so hard to describe because all people have different pain tolerances and it also depends on the location of the tattoo. The buzzing bothers me more than the pain.

It depends on where you get it and how much of a pain tolerance you have. On a fleshy part of the body it is not bad, like a bee sting. On a part of the body right on a bone it hurts like hell!

When you are young it makes you feel manly, independent, and somewhat of a rebel....after about 25 years, unless you are a tattooed freak performing at the circus, you generally feel like an idiot. They fade, turn greenish, blur into your skin, etc.
Oh, you mean the pain? Like little mosquito bites on soft flesh and like bee stings on harder flesh.

It stings. The outline hurt me the most, especially the part over a bony area. The filling in didn't hurt as much.
edit...
The paper clip thing below sounds pretty accurate.
