Without cold wintry days you would not appreciate warm spring days...

Without cruel and mean people you would not appreciate those who are nice...

Without ugliness you would not appreciate beauty...

Without Evil.. you would not have a choice to make between that and Good to prove what kind of person you are (to yourself)...

Without Evil.. there would not be as many opportunities for people to do Good...

So, I believe that Evil is necessary in the world.

Yes... though it seems like a stupid thing to say sometimes and I think we all wish that the world could just be totally good,

you can only know something by knowing it's opposite.

you are hot because it's not cold.
you are tired because you are not awake.
you are good because you are not evil...

so if there was no evil, there would be no good.

if everyday was a perfect day, than how do we know to enjoy it. How can you appreciate a rose if all you see everywhere are roses? if there was no wrong in the world then it would be a very dull existence. It's necessary evil that keeps us entertained. Otherwise there is no variety.

"Evil" is that which is NOT. Neither person, place, nor thing. It is the opposite to God, and there is no opposite to God.

Only belief in it keeps it "alive". It is belief that brought it into view, and only the ceasing of belief in it will end it. It simply does not exist.

Hi Amy C. Some of the answer to your question can be found by reading Isaiah 45:7:

(God is speaking about Himself) "I form the Light, and create darkness: I make Peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things."

This passage tells us of God's Total Authority over all creation. Now, when we speak of evil, we have to understand that evil takes on many different forms. When we see hurricanes, tsunamis, or earthquakes and the destruction they cause, we know that this is an evil thing. However, these are not sinful acts. God causes or allows these things to happen. He is in charge of all natural disasters (there IS NO MOTHER NATURE as most weather reporters claim). Another form of evil is sin. Sin is a direct rebellious act against God. Mankind creates this evil (sin). God does not create sin, we must never consider this possibilty. Scripture will not allow it. To come under the Wrath (Judgment) of God is very evil. God set up His Judgment Day for all of the unsaved. This is the worst evil a person can experience.

That is why when we pray to God and ask Him (in the Lord's prayer found in Luke 11:4)

"And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliever us from evil."

That is talking about the day of evil (Judgment day).

God warned Adam in Genesis 2:17 not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil:

"but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die"

The moment they rebelled against God by eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they then desperately needed to eat of the tree of Life. We read in Genesis 3:22-24:

" And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of Life, and eat, and live forever. Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So He drove out the man; and He placed at the east end of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of Life."

The tree of life is Jesus Christ. God had put Adam and Eve out of the garden and would not allow them to eat of the tree of life. In order to eat of the tree of Life, this required that they must make a payment for the sins that they had commited against God. In order to eat of the tree of Life, we have to go to Christ. He is the only Saviour. Only He could pay this price required for our sins.
