All day long I have been itching like crazy everywhere and it won't go away and when I scratch I break out into welts/hives. I am not taking any medication and haven't had anything to eat, so I know its not from that. This has happened once before where I had to go to the emergency room and wound up getting 6 shots of epinephren. My lip is slightly swollen and my eyelids are slightly swollen, but other than that its mainly the itching thats driving me nuts and I know that I won't be able to sleep because of it.

I don't believe its something I ate, smelled or applied to my skin as I said before this happened once before where I had to go to the ER, the dr said it can be caused by something going on in your life other than things that most people are allergic to. I did get an epi pen before, but never had to use it and its expired so I can't use it anymore and if I had used its, it is only good for one shot. Before when I had this happen the Dr felt that it was caused by something internal, not from food, or trying a new soap, etc, he thought that something was going on inside of me that was causing it, but never did figure it out. I have not changed what I eat and I always buy laundry soap that has no dyes or perfumes just to be safe. This is the first time its happened in many many months and I'm not really doing anything different. I just know when I scratch I immediately break out into hives.

I tried benadry last night which made me sleep, but I still have the itching problem all over and it has caused my lip to swell and the right side of my cheek next to my lip looks like I went to the dentist. If anyone knows of anything else. We do have a hot tub, but I haven't been in it for a while. I am at a loss as to what to do.

It sounds like some bad general allergy, since your mouth and eyelids are swollen too. You need a thorough medical checkup.

In the meantime, for the itching, the herb Chickweed is a specific for skin itches. It's a rather common plant found almost everywhere. Gather some, and rinse well. Or buy some. Make up a fair amount of strong infusion, like a tea. Use this in your bath for itch relief.

You may also make a concentrated amount of the infusion and mix it with some good skin lotion (if possible, one which does not contain mineral oil). Fruit Of The Earth is a good brand to use. You can also add the juice from a fresh large Aloe Vera leaf. Apply this mixture onto the skin. Optional: a drop or two of Peppermint oil is cooling and soothing to the skin.

Other useful herbs for skin conditions are Marigold, Marshmallow Root, St John's Wort. These can be applied to the skin or drunk as an infusion.

Yet other herbs which help by acting as lymphatic drainers and detoxifiers are Burdock Root, Cleavers, RedClover, Figwort, Fumitory, Dandelion, Golden Seal, Heartsease. These can be drunk as an infusion.

Use the aerial parts of the plants (leaves and flowers) unless otherwise stated.

Hope you get well soon.

Take some Claritan or Benadryl. I'm going thru the same thing right now too. The doctor gave me Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream to put on my hive welts. It helps with the itching and drys them up. I've had this for a month now and it's clearing up some. My lips or eyes haven't swollen up like yours though. That sounds a little more serious. If the Claritan doesn't help maybe you should see a doctor about it.

Sounds like you are having an allergic reaction to something. Maybe you got stung or bit by something, or have you changed detergents or soaps or lotions? Before you go off and clog up the ER, go take some Benadryl and get some lidocaine or cortisone cream. That should help with the swelling and the itching. If it keeps on tomorrow then see a doctor.

Cathy,

You have a release of histamines in your bloodstream as a result of something you are wearing, ate, or smelling.

Go to the drug store and get Claritan or Benedryl. Both are available in generic form. Benedryl will make you sleepy. For immediate comfort, take a cold shower. This will cause your blood vessels to shrink, removing the histamine from the skin surface.

I was allergic to most foods as a kid. I suffered from the exact same symptoms.

Why don't you take some benadryl? If you are having an anaphalactic reaction, it would have happened by now. It would not take all day to develop.

What did u have the reaction to before? Did you go to an allergist and get tests, if you had an anaphalactic reaction, you should have been prescribed an epi pen.

have you spent any time in a hot tub ? my friend got a bacterial infection in her skin that was itchy and looked like hives. she went to a doctor who told her it was what she was eating and she hadn't changed laundry soap, dryer sheets, soap, or her eating habits. she got a 2nd opinion and found out it was from the hot tub and had to be put on meds.
