cover your couch in plastic next time she comes over and when she asks you why there is plastic on the couch tell her it is because she smells like dead ***. That might help

It may be that she is unable to take care of her own personal needs. Does she live alone? Does she eat correctly and see a doctor regularly? Can you call the local Senior Citizen Center to find a social worker or senior citizen advocate to make a visit to her home? She may be developing dementia because of high blood pressure or dehydration. Perhaps it is the start of Alzheimers and she just forgets that she is supposed to wash regularly. This may be the beginning of something very serious and it may be that she may need a Visiting Nurse or personal assistant at home to help her with her own basic care.

Invest in some Febreeze for the couch, and just grin and bare it. It is your hubby's mom.
Maybe more farther away -- but then she would visit for extended periods of time. Try to arrange meetings out at restaurants.

Why don't you try giving her a gift basket with feminine hygeine products for her birthday or christmas or something? But, don't let that be the only thing you give her, don't be too obvious. Tell her that you use the products and really like them (even if you've never used them before in your life).
Also, Febreeze works wonders!!!

My motto is if they are related to you, tell it like it is, if she still smells put a big garbage bag on your couch and have her sit only on it. She'll get the message or buy her a nice bath collection of soaps.
