He is a yellow lab - pointer mix, less than two years old. We got him four months ago from a lab rescue shelter. He is sweet as he can be, affectionate, and great to other people and dogs. But he jumps up on me when he is excited and will not stop. Only if I get really mean-looking and say something in a harsh tone does he stop (for about ten seconds). What is a way to get rid of this habit, especially with guests coming over. He's very smart, but plays dumb when he wants. Dog experts, you are needed here. Thanks!

It is great you rescued him. I'm sure he going to be a great dog and he definitely still is a pup - they say labs take up to four years to outgrow all that.
I've learned two methods. One is, you are always supposed to turn your back on the dog, they are looking for attention and if they don't get it they will learn to stop. This takes some time and consistency.
The other is holding onto their paws and walking them back. It is uncomfortable and awkward for them. Again, consistency.

Shock collars are not harmless and they are barbaric.
He needs training, that is all. When he starts jumping, turn your back on him and ignore him until he settles and is calm. Then you pay him attention, calmly. This will take a while, but everyone in your household must also do this. If possible have a little treat in your pocket for when he sits calmly.
When you have guests coming over, put him on a lead and if he tries to jump, quickly and quietly take him out of the room and put him in "time out" room, dont talk to him, just do it. Ask your guests not to pay any attention to your dog until he sits quietly.
All of this will take a little bit of time, but consistancy will win out

Spraying dogs with water doesnt have the same effect as with cats. Dogs are more than likely to enjoy being sprayed and think it is a game. Labs and pointers are both bird/water dogs.

I would spray him with water and when he jumps on you, don't look at him or give him attention. Spray the space between you so you create a boundary between yourself and the dog. Don't spray at the dog directly. If the water spray doesn't work, use a citronella spray. It smells a little like lemon and it's not harmful but dogs don't like it because of their sensitive noses. You can then say "off" so the next time when you have a visitor over, you can use the same command to keep your dog down.

you could try putting the leash on him while you are in the house and you know guests are coming over. When someone rings the doorbell step on his leash so that he can't jump up. It will almost force him to lay down and be quiet while the guest arrives. He will not jump and usually sits there wagging his tail. You can also do that while your walking him. If someone is walking up to you do the same thing with his leash. Also, praise him and give him treats when he doesn't jump and is quiet. Goodluck!

OK, before I answer, Dalton Mullins, that idea is really mean! I am really big dog lover. I don't care how "harmless" it is. Anyways, my thought was to just spray him with water in a squirt bottle when he jumps up. I go to a dog class about once a week, the instructor teaches us that when the dog jumps up spray him.

The way I broke mine was everytime he jumped on me I would step on his back paws just a little, just enough for him to feel it after a few times he stopped

Its really easy...when he jumps on you take your knee and just put it in his way when he jumps. not to kick or anything like that..just raise it thats telling him that its not permitted and be sure to keep doing that & he will stop & behave for you...check out ceaser millan
