Give him a year or two. Unless you think it is "really difficult to understand". It could be a sign of a hearing problem or deafness. Have you had his/her hearing checked out ? They do it with little kids now too. Good Luck! :)

My son is 2 years 3 months. We just had his speech tested. He showed that he is speaking at an 11 month age level. His receptive areas are higher then average. You might want to start with a test at an ENT(ears nose throat) specialist. You can also contact your local WIC office and ask about a speech evaluation. They will be able to lead you to the correct place. I KNOW it is very fusturating trying to figure out what "UH" is along with the pointing. Hang in there and look into the tests that I mentioned. He will come around. After only 3 weeks of speech therapy my son went from speaking 10-15 jumbled words to putting 2-3 word utterances together. Here is something I have seen his speech therapist do.... When holding a cup hold it to your chin and say cup. They want that cup and will watch it and make eye contact with your mouth. If he tries (even if it dosnt sound like it) praise him and say " That's right..CUP...Good Job". Good Luck!

It is all in your definition of clearly. Does he make it clear what he wants? I believe that a bench mark is 100 words at 18 months. At his age, it will be more with many 2-3 word sentences. Make sure that all the important people in his life, are speaking to him, and not using baby talk. Have him repeat things to you. You want the blanket? Yes you do! You feel silly at first, but boy they catch on fast when you get excited. Just be patient, use simply language and have him repeat everything to you!! If you are at all concerned, have his hearing tested and have him evaluated by a speech pathologist and/or a ECE pre-school teacher. Have fun!!

Boys tend to be a bit slower on the speaking clearly..our son is going to be 3 in February and he's NOW forming sentences and we can understand him about 80% of the time...we still have to decipher some of his words...but he'll start and then...if he's like our 5 yr old son..DOESN"T stop talking until he goes to sleep at night...I don't know what is worse..my 16 yr old daugher or my 5 yr old son..in the TALKING constantly

well that depends on your definition of speaking clearly. My 5 year olds sound perfectly clear to me, but I often have to translate to strangers if they are trying to tell a story. They give their order at restaurants with no problem at all.

I'm also a nanny of a just turned 2 year old, she speaks very well for her age. I can usually understand most of what she says.

As long as your childs' vocabulary is continuing to grow, I wouldn't worry about it.

Are adults spending a lot of time engaging in converstaion with him ? The child who is read to , and talked to often , will respond sooner ; but they are all different and learn at their own pace . Talk to the pediatrician about your concerns at the next check-up .

I know someone who is a speech therapist and they said a child's speech doesn't develop completely until they are five or six years old. Be patient, you will be so suprised how they will develop over the next year.

My son just turned three and He just recently began to speak about 90% clearly, so just give it time, and be sure to correctly pronounce words back to him just to help him out.
