mostly because your lower jaw was/is "too big"

I did! But not for that reason. Mine was because my lower jaw was a really big underbite, some was fixed with orthodontia, but a big part of it had to be done with the jaw surgery. They made a Z cut behind my bottom wisdom teeth and kind of "slid" the lower jaw forward. Also they performed a "genioplasty" at the same time, where they move up my chin to give me a more proportional profile, make my face less "long". It made me look a little different, but really helped my bite.
I had my mouth wired shut for 8 weeks, lost 30 pounds and dreamt of hamburgers, Once the wires were off, I couldn't open my mouth wider than 1/2 inch for another two weeks, so frustrating!
Good luck to you on yours, mine was 16 years ago, and I am sure they are much better at it all now.

no. but i went to school with someone who did.
i recall him saying that it was painfull, but well worth it!
