I am going to take the unpopular road on this answer.
Matthew 10:34-36 34 "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn "'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law-- 36 a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.'
I do not believe you or I are that different. I do not think we are different at all. We are all human. We all sin.
Romans 3:23 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
The only difference, and it is a big one, is what Jesus Christ has said and done by dying on the cross for our sins 2000 years ago and his Resurrection.
John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

People cling stubbornly to their differences without thinking, and yet you ask why do we think.
Truth is ONE and if we were to think and reason we must arrive at that ONE Truth, but asking one to think is usually taken as an insult to our abiltiy to reason or about our level of intelligence.
Behind it all is dishonesty with one's self and a mental block that disables thought.

I think it is because we woefully fear that we don't, in the long run, matter. By staking out a belief supported by the community, and defending it with even irrational arguments, we beg others to attend to our opinion, and by extension, to our lives.
It's the same logic that leads to suicide bombings and recent school shootings, only toned down several degrees of magnitude. Nevertheless, the internal sensation of pointlessness is so disquieting, people will ignore others rights to quell the pain.

Because fundamentally humans are pack animals. We identify, and draw strength from, our "group". We have a multi-faceted social order; each smaller group as we go down we have more loyalty too. Most people it's Nationality-Belief Group (religion, philosophy, political party etc)-Friends-Family.

our responsibilities to our immediate families must come first, above the needs of our extended families, aka, mankind. if we do not accept and fulfill that responsibility first, then we are useless and hypocritical in all other "philanthropic" endeavors. thanks for the points.
