I am here in Afghanistan now. I have been here for nearly nine months now. Pack light, but bring music(MP3 if possible), books if you like to read, any survival stuff you think you can bring, knife, gerber/leatherman, flashlight. Pack for the feild, it gets hot in the summer, and snows in the winter. It can be alot safer than Iraq depending on where you are at. But we are still at war here, soldiers die every day from rounds and IED's. Helicopters go down. Expect the unexpected. Plan to be bored and to jump through your butt at a moments notice. Just like any other aspect of the military. Be safe, and I may see you if you get here in the next couple of months.

I second the baby wipes, maxi pads (stick them in your helmet to absorb sweat), anti-bacterial hand gel, shaving cream, gatorade drink mix, good coffee and creamer (if you're a coffee drinker), and a few pairs of good sunglasses like Oakleys. I've been sending care packages to servicemen in Iraq for two years now and the items I listed are the most requested. I don't know how different Afghanistan will be, but a lot of guys ask for Xbox games, dvds, books and magazines to pass the time. The hardest thing they deal with (aside from fighting the enemy) is boredom.
The best of luck to you, and Godspeed.

Not forces, but know a few who have been. It aint pretty....Depends where your going and how far down the line you are. Eat what you can when you can, sleep when you can, badly supplied, not through fault of RLC, Keep your riffle spotless, Take loads of baby lotion wipes cos the dust get everywhere. You'll see alsorts of things you wouldn't expect, the Taliban are nasty. Remember your training, Keep your wits about you, keep your head down and come home safe n sound. Make sure everyone writes to you, or e bluey's you, use your phone card wisely, better to make a few short calls than one longer one.Talk about things don't bottle them. Good Luck xxx

i was amongst the first british troops out there in 2002, there is nothing to see apart from hills, baron fields and a country that is stuck in a time warp. if your infantry expect the worst and i'm not saying that to scare you. if your in logistics or something similiar then you might get a bit of an easier time. my advice is keep your sh it about you and listen to the advice of your buddies who have more experiance in these situations. good luck and make sure you come home safely.
p.s start collecting porn mags now lol

My husband is currently serving over in Iraq, unfortunately, in two years it'll be Afghanistan. Keep your head down and stay vigil! Make sure you're aware of your surrounding and keep your spirits up! Remember you're always in our prayers.
Unfortunately, what'll you'll see:
Death, destruction, good people, hostile people, really bad food, sick & poor children, demolished cities, wounded soldiers...etc.
It's still a war zone and all of it is still there!
Stay safe And Come Home Soon!

you will need an air condition, a bed, a fridge, some cans of drinks.....
it will be very hot 60 Celsius, plenty of men with beard, women with veils, desert all round, sand on your shoes, clothes, hands, face, eyes, in your mouth, in your food...
But do not worry, most people are not bad, they only through stones against soldiers except if you enter by mistake a Taliban zone!! do not fly low with a helicopter and finally buy a pair of shoes if you are travelling from the UK!!

Bring Maxi Pads and Baby wipes...no jokes I am serious. The Baby wipes to take a shower with and the pads where them on your elbow and knees so when you low crawl you won't get scraped(rug burn)! Oh Yeah Don't Drop the Soap.
