This is how my Mother used to make it when I was growing up...

Hot Cocoa
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa
Dash salt
1/3 cup hot water
4 cups (1 qt.) milk
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Miniature marshmallows or sweetened whipped cream(optional)
1. Stir together sugar, cocoa and salt in medium saucepan; stir in water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil. Boil and stir 2 minutes. Add milk; stirring constantly, heat to serving temperature. Do Not Boil.
2 Remove from heat; add vanilla. Beat with rotary beater or whisk until foamy. Serve topped with marshmallows or whipped cream, if desired. Five 8-oz. servings.

VARIATIONS: Add one of the following with the vanilla extract:

SPICED COCOA: 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg. Serve with cinnamon stick, if desired.

MINT COCOA: 1/2 teaspoon mint extract OR 3 tablespoons crushed hard peppermint candy OR 2 to 3 tablespoons white creme de menthe. Serve with peppermint candy stick, if desired.

CITRUS COCOA: 1/2 teaspoon orange extract OR 2 to 3 tablespoons orange liqueur.

SWISS MOCHA: 2 to 2-1/2 teaspoons powdered instant coffee.

COCOA AU LAIT: Omit marshmallows or whipped cream. Spoon 2 tablespoons softened vanilla ice cream on top of each cup of cocoa at serving time.

SLIM-TRIM COCOA: Omit sugar. Combine cocoa, salt and water; substitute nonfat milk. Proceed as above. With vanilla, stir in sugar substitute with sweetening equivalence of 1/2 cup sugar.

CANADIAN COCOA: 1/2 teaspoon maple extract.

MICROWAVE SINGLE SERVING: Coombine 1 heaping teaspoon HERSHEY'S Cocoa, 2 heaping teaspoons sugar and dash salt in microwave-safe cup or mug. Add 2 teaspoons cold milk; stir until smooth. Fill cup with milk. Microwave at HIGH (100%) 1 to 1-1/2 minutes or until hot. Stir to blend; serve.

You have 5 options.
1. Buy a box of Hershey baking chocolate poweder
and follow the recipe, on the box.
2. Use a hot cocoa mix.
3. use a mix for Mexican Hot Cocoa.
4. Melt some chocolate and add to milk.
5. squeeze some chocolate syrup into a mug of milk, stir, and
warm it in the microwave; stir again and enjoy it!

During my trips to Paris, I was directed to "Angelina's Cafe" for their signature hot chocolate. I wasn't a huge hot chocolate fan until I tried their version. It was called, "Chocolat Afrique"...or something like that. It arrived in a little white porcelain pitcher. It was so thick and rich. It was incredibly delicious. I was so full that I didn't eat dinner that night!

Basically, here's what they do to achieve their recipe...
You need:

-Real cocoa powder (like Droste's or Sharfenberger...or Hershey's if you're really in a bind...but there are better brands out there). If you can find a higher percent of real chocolate...then it will be better.
-1/2 C. Sugar
-1/2 C. Water
-1 C. of heavy whipping cream (still in cream form not whipped cream)
-1 C. of half & half (it is a mixture of half cream/half milk)
-1/2 tsp. of butter

In a large saucepan, pour about 3 T. of cocoa powder at the bottom, add in about 1/2 c. of water to the pan creating a paste, turn the heat on low. Continue to stir the mixture slowly adding in about 1/2 C. of sugar. A chocolate syrup of sorts should be developed by now...slowly whisk in the heavy whipping cream and then the half & half. Continue to whisk until piping hot...do not let it scald or it will burn. Add in the little pc. of butter into the pan just before you serve it. Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs. Enjoy. Once you have real hot chocolate you won't be able to drink the instant packaged kind.

Hot Chocolate
This is how my Mom used to make it and it was yummy. In a sauce pan add 1/4 c. water, then to that add two tablespoons of cocoa, then add 1/2 c. sugar. Stir all together and bring it to a simmer. Add whole milk now just enough until you get the color you want it to be and do the taste test (try a spoonful of it) and if you like it sweeter then add more sugar to taste. Last but not least after you've turned the fire off and right before serving add 1 tsp. of vanilla and stir.
Now if you like your hot chocolate a little richer (darker chocolate color) all you need to do next time is add more cocoa.

buy a chocolate bar (not like a hershey bar,the one u use for hot chocolate) and first boil the milk (works with water also but better with milk) then break the chocolate into pieces and put them in the pot. add some sugar if u want but it probably will have natural sugar in it already. wait until its done (which is about 10-15 mins) and enjoy! i wish i could make hot chocolate rite now but unfortunetly my kitchen is under construction rite now so be thankful u can actually make homemade hot chocolate! i live in the northern part of nj and COLD!! its only fall but sometimes it gets really cold and sometimes it gets really warm. the weathers crazy here! well hope i helped! lemme no if i did!

For old fashioned hot chocolate, use powdered coco OR grate it yourself from fresh & add it to warm milk heated on the stove in a saucepan over LOW heat. Stir until it is all blended, add a dash of vanilla or fesh vanilla bean or some freshly grated cinnamon. Don't forget a dash of fresh mint leaves added while the milk is hottest will give you chocolate mint flavor. Just remember to pour the hot mixture through a strainer to get out the lumps & remove the mint or vanilla pieces. If you have used unsweetened chocolate, you'll need to add some sugar or honey while the milk is heating.

Adding honey, whipped cream and a pinch of sugar tastes sweet but fine. Adding 1 grape, 1 orange, 1 blueberry, 1 strawberry, and 1 cherry Jolly Rancher jelly bean will make a jolly fruity taste, or add a spearmint chewing gum stick for a powerful, minty fresh taste.

You've got some really awesome recipes that people have given you. Enjoy!! But if you want to wake it up a little bit, add 1/2 tsp. of cayenne pepper or red chili flakes to your cocoa as it's brewing. If you do use the pepper flakes, strain them out before serving. I know it sounds odd, but trust me... you won't be sorry. Spicy hot cocoa is absolutely perfect on a cold night. :)
