cats have the "Houdini" gene. Crawl spaces are irresitable to them. If your cat was able to crawl through this amount of space, he'll be able to crawl out - unless he gets stuck or he panics. Don't worry, he'll soon get too big to crawl through 1-1/2 clear space. You can make the underside of your sofa unattractive to him by laying two-sided sticky tape on the floor directly underneath the front and back of your sofa.

Good luck!

Cats don't have collarbones, which makes them very flexible. If a cat can get his head through an opening, he can generally get his whole body inside.

Cats can squeeze into small places. I don't know if yours could get under your sofa, but if he was and was hurt you would hear him meowing.

I have one cat that can fit through an opening that size. But remember -- if he got himself in, he can get himself out.
