I think it depends on how "severely" you are depressed. Do you mope around the house every day, all day? Did it affect your work status? Did it drive away your partner?

If that's the case, then there is nothing wrong with seeing a THERAPIST. Someone to talk to, who doesn't dispense drugs as a solution.

Some of the others have excellent suggestions as well. Exercise, involve yourself in a hobby, volunteer somewhere where you can make a difference to people (nursing home, hospital, etc.).

Art is great therapy, as is writing. Start a journal. Call someone, like a good friend, that can listen to you without having to come up with an answer, or judge you. Start a blog online, join a forum where others feel the same way you do.

Turn off all of the lights, TV, and phone. Turn on some mellow music you enjoy, and light some aromatherapy candles. Breathe deeply and focus on the good in your life.

Also, SMILE. Smiling is a great way to relieve stress, and will cheer up others around you as well.

Good luck! Feel free to e-mail me if you just want to vent!

Sometimes. I have a friend that was about to use medications .. but the Doctor said he could try exsercise .. So he exsercises by running or walking a couple miles each day and he feels much better. If it doesn't improve after a couple of weeks, then it would be best to see a Doctor about it. Good Luck to you! :)

Yes,

You can meditate, find your zen place and let go.. just be calm and meditate. (I suffer from depression, and take medication) but i find it still helps to meditte and find a zen place to center myself.

also, you can use your depression to your advantage. If your good at art work, drawing, painting, etc. Use it as therpy. it tends to help so I hear.. Personally I'm not good at any of the above..

but if your depression is really bad, you'll need to see a doctor.

Yes you can look up alternative medicine for depression and it should give you supplements. I know St. John's wart is a good one try also to get prue essential oils like lavender and chamomile are good for stress relief.
Take some meditation classes or Yoga, exercise is a good stress reducer it also gives you the self confidence you need to be happy about your mind and body.

I believe you can treat depression with prayer and you must believe that you can overcome depression. That's what I did.

I'm trying to do this too. I don't like how anti-depressants make me feel. I find creating art and finding ways to express yourself helps. Aromatherapy too. I wouldn't say I'm cured, but it makes life more livable. :)

possibly, but a person always needs a good evaluation....everyone says that docs prescribe meds to make money......poppycock I say.....the good ones don't need any more patients. A psychiatrist is the only trained professional to give a full evaluation....you may or MAY NOT have clinical depression and just need something temporarily....

just 15 minutes of physical activity (walking for example) raises the "feel good" chemicals in your brain and you may feel a little better. support groups may be beneficial too if there is a particular issue you are working with
