regualr cable has a max broadcast 400 lines resolution .To get full high Def you need not only a signal in HD but a live or recorded program in HD.

Regular cable is 480i, hence the reason you are getting 480i picture. A progressive scan DVD player will play at 480p. To get HD you will need to get digital cable or satellite and make sure to get an HD box. Even then you will only get 720p or 1080i. The only time you will get 1080p is with one of the new HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players. Also the PS3 and XBOX 360 have 1080p, if you are into games.

You best bet for now, until prices come down on the HD dvd players, is to get an "upconverting" DVD player, they're around 100 bucks at most elec giants. set it to output 1080i, and drive with the HDMI output, as they mostly will only drive 1080i with this output. Right now only the Sony blueray will output 1080p, and that's if your set will in fact display 1080p as 1080p even if it says 1080p.
