am a novice...how to find out if its a fake camera

The best way to differentiate between a fake and original nikon camera is to have it examined at a certified Nikon Service Center. If you are buying the camera from a friend or acquaintance, ask the seller if you can have it examined first by a service center. If you are buying the camera online, then there is no way for you to check. The only recourse you have is to check the seller's track record (also known as feedback in ebay).

Good luck!

As a novice you should buy your first camera in an expert photo shop. You may pay a little more, but they will (or should) also talk with you whether this camera is the right one for you.
The S5 is really cute, but perhaps it might not be what you need.
With the camera you must get an original Nikon warranty and also a form to register as a client of Nikon. If you are still uncertain, you can call the Nikon center and ask whether the serial nr. of the S5 you have seen is that of a genuine S5. You might get this information even from contact on the Nikon homepage. I don't know the adress for Nikon USA, only

Hope that helps.
