Is it true that small animals can get their heads stuck in them and strangle themselves. I was told this and so I take the time to cut them into small pieces before putting them in the garbage Is this necessary or is it a waste of time? Do these end up floating in the ocean where animals can get a hold of them?

Yes it's true! Please cut them!

Litter kills or injures animals. Many small animals crawl into bottles or jars and get stuck and slowly starve to death. Animals get caught in plastic six pack rings, plastic bags, fishing line and a multitude of throwaways. Birds that are stuck, can’t fly away from danger. Sometimes animals caught in six pack rings are strangled as they grow too big for the opening. Animals get cut, infected and die. Every year, millions of birds, fish and animals die from litter.

Also they can get to sea very easily, not just by people littering, but big cities like NY put their garbage on barges and ship it elsewhere.

Yes, animals can get stuck in the plastic rings. I always cut mine, along with crushing my yogurt containers, and metal cans. And if a jar has a top, I always put it back on, don't know if this helps when the truck crushes the trash but I do it anyway. Any type of trash can end up near water due to the wind, littering, seagulls, etc.

Yes it is true, so before you throw the plastic out just cut with scissors all the circles.
There was a few stories and videos back in the 80's showing ducks dead after getting their bills caught in the plastic.
I cut my circles all the time now out of habit.

You should cut them up, but they will only end up in the ocean if someone puts them there.

The plastic holders can be recycled with your plastic item.

It's one in a million, but how many million six packs are sold in a year. You can cut them in such a way that there is one piece with no loops. Keep cutting, recycle if you can, and thank you.

It is true. And you do have to cut them out. It does not even have to be ocean. Even rats can suffer.
