It depends a lot on what is available in your area. Vinyl windows are the most popular and have a great insulation value. Good windows start with Amsco or Jeld-wen. The are great for the price. If you want a really high end try looking at Milgard or Andersen, they have many more options but are also more expensive.
Another option that almost all window manufactures offer is energy efficient glass (referred to a LOW-E). This costs a little more but will keep warm air in during the winter and sun heat out during the summer. Well worth the cost.

Are you shopping for quality or price? There are several choices you can make. I install windows, and Andersen Windows/ Doors are by far the most superior brand of premium windows. They aren't cheap, though! $400.00-$600.00 is the average, depending on the style you choose. If you are price-shopping, go to Home Depot and get a standard run-of-the-mill aluminum insulated for around $100.00 or vinyl for around $200.00, depending on the size.3-4 ft. by 3-4 ft. is average.
