I'm a first-year college student this fall, and I'm so tired of not being able to cook! The commons has food that isn't bad, but it can be inconvient to walk there while I'm trying to do homework or whatever in my room. Plus, it isn't open very late, and I don't have time to eat when it's open. Any suggestions for me?

Just about anything can be cooked in the microwave unless you want it to be browned and crisp. Of course there are frozen foods that come with special browning/crisping trays included. The secret to cooking in the microwave is to know how long to cook something. Rolls, pancakes, waffles, frozen pretzels, etc. only take maybe 15 to 30 seconds to cook. Start off with easy foods like the one serving macaroni and cheese, instant oatmeal, things like that. Vegetables are exceptionally good cooked in the microwave and do not require much more that a little water and some seasoning. With experimenting I bet you can find dozens of things to cook. Good luck!

Hamburger Helper makes single-serve microwaveable pasta mixes. I have a cupboard full of them in my dorm! You can also get Campbell's Soup to go. All you do is microwave, stir, and eat!

I know what you mean. I am a Junior at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. The commons building is clear on the other side of campus from my dorm room.

Here's one of my favourites. Note you have to cook the noodles first.
2 cups cooked elbow macaroni
1 tin flaked tuna
1 can cream of mushroom soup
3/4 cup milk
salt and pepper to taste
Combine the ingredients in a large microwave-safe pot. Cook covered on high setting for 5 minutes, stop and stir it, cook on medium-low setting for 10 minutes. Done!

Just about everything that you can buy in a box or find in the freezer section of your local grocery store. There really is no need for recipes nowadays now that you can buy a whole meal in a box and nuke it and presto in 5min a 4 course meal.
