Olives are fruit.
Olive oil has been used to moisturize skin and to fuel lamps, to heal and to cook, and it has been so important that it has even been used as a form of currency.
Olive oil is more than an artifact of the past. There are approximately 800 million olive trees in the world, in places as distant from each other as Angola, China and California. However, most olive trees circle the Mediterranean, where people have based their diets on the olive for 6,000 years. In Greece, every man, woman and child consumes an average of five gallons of olive oil a year!
Olive oil is very high in the antioxidants vitamin A and vitamin E, which neutralize cancer-causing free radicals in our bodies. It is monounsaturated, therefore it lowers the “bad” LDL cholesterol without reducing the “good” HDL cholesterol. This results in improved circulation, lowered blood pressure and less risk for heart disease. Recent research also indicates that olive oil may be especially effective in preventing both breast cancer and osteoporosis.

It's considered a fruit.
The Olive is a species of small tree in the family Oleaceae, native to coastal areas of the eastern Mediterranean region. Its use as a major agricultural product in preclassical Greece led to its wider distribution throughout the western Mediterranean.
The fruit of this plant is initially inedible, and must be treated before it can be eaten. It may be processed either while unripe, to produce "green olives", or when ripe, to produce "black olives".
Green olives contain a high acid content and do not require extensive processing. Green olives are not "cooked" like the black olives but green olives are cured with lye. The method of curing used makes a big difference in their taste.
Olives get nearly eighty-five per cent of their calories from fat. However, it is predominantly the good fat, the mono-unsaturated variety. Olives contain an abundance of sodium, having about 350 milligrams in three large olives.
Olives contain about 5 calories each.
Olives are a very good source of monounsaturated fats and a good source of vitamin E and iron.

An olive is a fruit, Ripe Olives are a good source of monounsaturated fat. There are only two grams of fat in a 15 gram serving, with the majority of fat coming from monounsaturates and part of the remaining fats being essential fatty acids. One serving contains only three percent of your total fat intake for the day. Contrary to what you may think, olives are not high in calories. In fact, an extra large Black Ripe Olive has only seven calories - and a serving equal to only 25 calories! This makes olives an ideal snack or ingredient for adding flavor and variety to the lower fat meals you prepare. But there is not a lot of nutritional value in this fruit. Mostly sodium and trace minerals.
