I have the mirena IUD and I love it. I've had it for almost a year now. After being on the pill for 12 years, I love not thinking about birth control daily.
Insertion: I don't have any children, so it was painful to me. Most docs will put it in at your six week post partum appointment when your cervix is still relatively soft, so it isn't so bad. Takes less than ten minutes, they use a speculum and the iud is on a spring loaded applicator that pushes it in there. I was crampy for about a day after, then it felt fine.
I don't notice any mood changes. You still have the pms sort of symptoms, but nothing terribly drastic like people complain about with the pill.
Side effects: Not many. It's possible to get cysts on your ovaries, which I did, and they spontaneously resolved within four months. I think the possibility of cysts is like 12%. My acne is worse, but my doctor said that's because I'm not on the pill anymore, and doesn't have anything to do with the iud.
Periods are great. They're unusual, but that's a good thing. I spotted for about 5 weeks after insertion. Then I had two or three periods that were regular. Now my period is almost non existent. Little bit of pink when you wipe, and that's the end of it. No cramping. I've saving a ton of money not buying pads and tampons.
I love the iud, and would encourage anyone to try it. You need to be in a monogamous relationship because any infection or std you get can go into the uterus more easily because of the iud. This can effect future fertility. The iud is good for 5 years, but can be removed any time if you want to have another baby.

I got the mirena IUD and I LOVED LOVED LOVED it, having it but in was a little cramping but no more than a period. I ddi have some spotting for the first couple of weeks after having it but in though. Actually the worst part of having it put in is that you have to be on your period when they do it. I never had any side effects on it because it is so low in hormones that most people aren't affected on it. I went a whole year to have with no periods at all and within 4 months of having it taken out I was pregnant. I am planning on having it reinserted when I have my 6 week check-up after my baby is born.
Its true some people have trouble with it, but that is mostly because it is not recommended for peoople who have never had a child.
Also so you know my hubby never once felt it nor did I while it was in. I think this is the best form of birthcontrol out there because its furtule no hormones and its so convenient. Good luck with your choice. If you have any other questions about it email me at mcolby@gmail.com

Girl I am with you. I go to the doc next week for my check up. Just had my daughter 7 weeks ago.
I want to have another child but not ready yet. This is my second...I am thinking about the Mirena IUD too...
You can decide to when you want it taken out and it last for five years....

I had my daughter a year ago. My doctor said that it was the best bc. It works good. I have not had any health problems. My periods last longer but, I been using it since December. I like it cause I know if you miss a dosage of take the pill u can mess up. So I choose this. It last for 5 years. Also, if you wanted to have kids the doctor can take it out and you can start trying the next day.

Side effects was spotting for 3 months I had mine inserted when my son was 4 weeks old. Dosent affect you moods. Your significant other might feel them but you can always tuck the strings around your cervix. The chance of pregnancy is that of a woman who has had surgery!
