That's an Arabian custom, they wear it to protect their heads from the hot sun. That is also why they wear the long white gowns, it has become a part of the culture's dress. The clothing they wear protects their skin from the sun's rays and keeps them cool in the desert climate. Many Muslim men who do not live in the desert wear it because they are trying to dress like Prophet Muhammad. And of course he dressed that way because he lived in the desert. Which as a Muslim, I think it is irrelevent to try to copy his culture, I copy his actions and advisories.

Headdress is a cultural tradition.
A muslim male is dressed for prayer when he is covered between his navel and his knees.
Muslims think they must follow Muhammad who was Arab and Muhammad's duty was to convey the Message of the Quran to all of mankind, but some people get the wrong message and follow Arab tradition instead of Quran.
There is absolutely no religious reason for headwear for men in Islam.
There is a command to wear your beautiful clothes for prayer and this should not apply to clothes that were designed for Arabs and desert people in places and in times that are different.

No no, the head dress is a cultural thing worn by some because it makes them feel more comfortable. There are no requirements as such.
