I'm trying to figure out what and how many cables I need to buy for my Toshiba HDA1 high definition DVD player to connect to my receiver. Is there a difference or are they identical sound-wise?

The HDMI cable is more convenient because the latest versions will do it all in one cable (more than digital S/PDIF coaxial will do). Most importantly, HDMI will allow you to pass full high-def 1080p signals.

Far as I know and what I have read there is no sound quality difference in the two cable connections. The only major difference is that HDMI carries video and audio to your receiver, and coaxial only carries the audio signal. So going with HDMI you would only need one cable connection vs. two connection with coaxial.

No difference. If your receiver will switch HDMI use that. However, receivers with HDMI switching are still rare but are becoming more common. If the reciever does not have HDMI connections, use coax or optical for your digital audio.

no digital is digital,

Toslink (fiber optic)
HDMI
and Digital Coax will all carry a digital signal.

However it is better go have as direct a connection as possible, and I like some redundancy, so you should run your video directly to the TV and run an audio source to your receiver.
