They want to remove his kidney, he will not let them. He talks about shotting hisself to keep from going back on the kidney machine again. I learned to run the machine and do treatment at home so to make it easier on him. He is off the machine right now. But he may have to be back on again. But he says he not going back on it and he will kill himself before. His father had his kidney removed 1987 because of cancer and they said he would live four years if remove, not six month if not. He died six weeks after surgery. So dad will not let them remove his. I understand that. It is just him wanting to take his life. I will stand by his choice about his kidney surgery but what can I say or do to keep him from killing himself?

First, try a kidney cleanse.

removing a kidney wont help since it since that the other kidney is not working proper if not he wont need the dialysis at all is ruff making a decision like that one specially that his father past away from the same thing all I can tell you is have lots of faith in God
Take care and I hope everything goes well...

My Mom died last November of kidney cancer and Alzheimer's. It had progressed too far for her, in her 80s, to aggressively pursue any meaningful treatment. Your Dad sounds depressed and ready to give up hope. How old is he and how long ago was he diagnosed.....the familial history only adds to his misery and that is understandable. Is he in pain? Is your Mom still alive, or are they still together as a couple? Does he have grandchildren? I'm searching for reasons for him to take a chance on dialysis and live as long as he can. He probably should have a psychiatric evaluation because he sounds very depressed and understandably so. Does he live alone? I know this must be an overwhelming situation for you. Do you have other family members.....maybe they can help. There are many local, State & National organizations that may be able to help. Hav you tried the KIdney Foundation? I feel your anguish and can only wish you the best and counsel you that he must dictate ADVANCE DIRECTIVES, a Living will and get his affairs in order....as much for himself as for YOU! Perhaps the clergy in your parish can be of assistance or call your local Council on Aging. Make sure you understand that in the end...it is his decision and that you also need to take care of YOU! I will keep watch to see what your decision is in this forum. I will pray for you and wish you blessings!
One more thing......when the time comes, make sure your Dad is placed on Hospice.....it will make the last 6 months of his life as peaceful as possible.

Talk to his doctor on the side, perhaps he can give him something for depression, or recommend a group that get together going through same problems. Your body changes alot after a bout of cancer, heart problems etc. and to be honest, you are worn out from dealing with it ,physically and mentally. Tell him to hang in there, how much you love him and can't stand the thought of loosing him. We will say a prayer for a miracle. I feel they have cure for Cancer. Try giving him alot of spiced tea.( I heard cinnamon was good for cancer) You keep your chin up and do everything for him you can so you want have any regrets.I will be praying for you also and I know God answers prayer( I'm a survivor of Cancer also, twice. I know God has a purpose for each of us, I don't know what it is> Why it happens but no there is a reason. Maybe your dad could get on Q&A and talk to some people this way, it might help. Love & Later

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

As you probably know you can live with one kidney.Dialasis will help in the long run.Did you ever ask him what it would do to you and your family if he were to take his life?Tell him he is being selfish. There are many Places that can help him through this horrible ordeal.I hope he gets better and when its time for you to marry just tell him you need him to walk YOU down that isle or you go alone! My prayers are w/you and your family!
