Generally speaking, there was something in the history of the two states that made it better to have two states than a single one. This could be economic considerations, geographical issues, or political questions. West Virginia used to be part of Virginia, for example, but became a separate state near the beginning of the Civil War because its residents disagreed with those who remained as the state of Virginia.

North and South Dakota are roughly the same size as the other states that were entering the USA at the time.

Also, for some reason the people who lived In Nort Dakota were mostly Repubican and South Dakota was mostly Democrat.

In 1889 when North and South Dakota were admitted into the Union they were considered a part of the wild west. The governments were highly corrupt and the railroad survivors created the dividing line. The corruptness was the determine factor in having two Dakotas. As far as the Carolina's Google them yourself.

I would advise you to go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page and type in Dakota and then Carolina. I'm sure it has much more information on the subject than I could recall.

And while we're on the subject, why isn't there a North California and South California, as well as a West, East, North and South Texas? Those states are just too big!
