Practice at LEASE 3 times a day. Do them in sets; don't forget, you do pull-ups, also do push-ups (different muscles). Your arms will gradually get stronger, and you'll develop strength and endurance. It works best that way, trust me.

Do your max, say, 5, every day for a week.
Next week, add 1... do 6 every day.
Keep adding up, week after week.
The other is assisted, doing pyramids... 3 to 6, then back down to 3. Do a set of 10 single count push ups between numbers. (3 pullups, 10 push ups, rest. 4 pull ups, 10 push ups, rest.) Have a friend help you with each set, so that you complete it by having him or her push you up with just enough assistance to complete the pull up.

THe only thing I can say about that is PRACTICE!!! PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! I used to have the same problem, and I would practice for about 15 mins to a hal-hour everyday, and eventually I got better at it!!!! :)
