My cat was born with the ringworm virus. He got it from his mother at birth. You must use gloves when handling him and also quarrantine him. It does seem cruel, but it is for the best. It can transfer on clothing, and other materials. There is really no medication to use until you get a prescription. Keep everything bleached and disinfected. Keep your hands washed. It takes 4-6 weeks to get rid of it. Whatever you do, don't put your hands in your hair. You will have to shave your head if you get it there! No kidding! Ringworm is nothing to play with. It is very contagious. Better to be safe than sorry. And by the way, hon, it is Columbus Day, not Thanksgiving! :) Good luck!

Ringworm is NOT a virus. It is a skin fungus...always has been.

It's not mean to 'lock him up' until you can get medication...but it's probably not absolutely *necessary* at this point if your other cat has already been exposed. They will both need to be treated, since your other cat can carry the fungal spores in its fur without even showing any signs.

The ringworm fungal spores can also get into your carpet, your furniture, and home air conditioning system (in worst-case scenarios.) So for that reason, limiting him to one small room may be of benefit to help decrease environmental contamination.

If you already took him to the veterinarian, why didn't they go ahead and give you a special 'just in case' shampoo to use until the culture was finished? That's what most of us normally do with kittens when we are suspicious of ringworm, due to the potential of spread to other pets and humans in the household. They had to be suspicious, or they wouldn't have tested him. And if they were able to call you with those test results, why couldn't you have gone then to get any medication they prescribed???

Two sites with good info

also, try

Iodine is too harsh and toxic. Tea tree oil is effective and safer. It can be found in Rite Aids and Giant and Health Food Stores.

Ringworm is contagious. You really need to separate your kitten from the animal and human family until her tests come up clean.

Good Luck.

The fact that your kitty is ALREADY on medication and PLEASE do put the iodine on the ringworm, it does kill them. It should NOT infect the others or your family with these preventive measures because the iodine will destroy the surface cells that make up the ring worm, it eats it.

If you don't have iodine, smash green walnut husks (what walnuts fall to the ground in) and use the acidic base from it. It too will destroy the ringworm and eat off the top layers of skin where the ringworm lives.

Thanks for caring so much about your family and pets!

If you have any iodine based medication like betadine (sp) put that on the areas where ur kitty has her ringworm and you must keep them seperate. Ringworm is hightly contagious.

You should defiantly keep them apart, so that your other cat will not get the ring worm. Make sure you wash your hands and anything else that touched the cat very well after touching it, use both soap and water. While you are waiting to get medication, you can put Lamisil LT on the affected areas. If the infection is not too bad, that may take care of it all on its own and you wont necessarily need to go get medicine from the vet's office.
