Arguing with a logical fallacy (ad hominem) isn't better than geniune intellectual discourse.

it depends on what you mean. some people find it more satisfying in an argument to just blurt out whatever they feel emotionally at the moment, like calling that person a hypocrite; some people use insults instead of a real authentic discussion of a topic because they believe what they believe but might not be able to back it up with an intelligently thought out reason, so the revert to childish insults; the implication being "you are too stupid to understand so why bother explaining" when the real meaning is usually " I don't even know why I support this idea buy I'll never let you know that, so you are the idiot. so there" either way is ridiculous but the province of uneducated people who want to take a stance on something. I see it alot.

It's not a better path. It's a defense mechanism for those who aren't sure how to exchange information, who don't know what is being talked about or who don't wish to entertain other viewpoints.
