Of course, himself safe and sound. But ask him to collect the wrappers from his food and drinks, it is in both English and Arabic, very cool. Scraves, perfumes is really good over there, DVD movies are cheap, tea pots, he can buy a prayer rug, coins, flags. It depends on where he gets stationed and what the FOB has. Sometimes if he goes off base into the merchant shops he can find cool stuff.

A few emptied water bottles filled with sand, and a ladies' hijab (headscarf). When he gets back (and he WILL), you can use the sand to fill up pretty glass bottles and use them for decorations or gifts. The scarves are just plain pretty, easy to transport, and inexpensive (online they're like $4-8 US)...If you don't want to wear it, use it as a shelf or table scarf, and display framed photos of your husband's co-workers/ fellow soldiers (you didn't mention whether he's military or civilian).
Heaven watch you and you family!

Just pray that he comes home alive. If he can find a good Persian rug, it will always be of value.

His original personality. He will definitely lose it after the hell he'll go through there. If he can't that, a cultural trinket sounds nice.
