18 to go to college.
22 for real.
I think it's borderline OK if you pay rent. BUT the parents need to raise the rent a little each year, or you'll have a 41 year old still living in "grandmummy's old wing".

I don't think it's an age thing - it's a maturity thing! I moved out when I was 18, but my brother is 19, and still lives at home. In my eyes he is WAY too immature to be out on his own, and I'm glad that he still lives with my mother. It depends on the person. As for a college student - if you feel ready then go for it, but I would stay until you graduate. It's hard to hold down a full-time job, and get an education at the same time. If parents are willing, stay until you graduate.

I still live at home and I'm in my early 20s, mainly because housing and rent is way too expensive here in L.A., and if I did live on my own it would take my whole paycheck for that month, and maybe even more. But, I think it's appropriate to move out at 18, since that is the age where you are an "adult".

Are you saying that you're in college, but are still living at home? 18 is generally considered the best time to leave. I left home earlier than that, but really, staying around too long is definitely not a good thing. How can you possibly learn true independence until you get out?

I've lived both in Europe and in the US. People view things very differently, depending on where you are. In Switzerland, France, England, Italy, it is very normal to live with your parents until your mid-twenties at least. In the US, you're often expected to leave as soon as 18, especially if you're going to college. I would rather have my kids stay with me (I'm in the US now) until they're 21. I would expect them though to start sharing a little of the expenses and certainly the housework.
