I believe they do understand us maybe a little too much because not only will they pick up on the words we use but also our body language so if we are lying to them they know it. Also when we think that they are not listening and assume that it is because they are not understanding language when it comes to cats the issue is simply that he/she is ignoring you. A lovely cat personality trait. Cats live by the old saying "leave a message I'll get back to you when I feel like it".

The longer your cat is around human vocabulary the more they understand and they do try to "speak" back to you. My 26 years old cat I swear answered us we just couldn't understand her. She would have conversations with us and use different tones and pitch. She understood way more than the word know and spelling the word "steak" did not save us. She learned to understand our word spelling also. She also could tell time. When we put a chicken or turkey in the oven she would sit there and watch until it came out finally we took pity on her sitting there and started telling her how long it would be before the food would be ready. She would walk away to go take a nap or go outside and lets say we told her two hours in two hours she was right back sitting in front or the stove crying loudly to let us know time was up! Good thing was it was hard to forget the oven or burn a turkey in our house! Cats are extremely intelligent and if you stimulate their intelligence they do learn at incredible speed. They just want to have to WANT to learn that is another problem!
So talk to your cat often no in a baby voice in your normal everyday voice discuss things with them and they will learn more and more vocabulary and as they get older they will prove my point!

Tika can understand a few words that relate to her like her name, food, pretty girl, but she mostly listens to the tone of voice people use with her...she does understand what shaking the bag of dry food or the treat can means...DINNER IS SERVED....BTW she has me trained in 'meow' and what those different meows mean!

To ChickenBoy...yes, dogs CAN understand when their 'master' speaks to them...why do you think they can follow spoken commands? Cats have some words that they understand, they are semi-independent and only respond if they want to.

I may be a little biased because I do love cats, but I do think that they do. If you constantly tlk to them as your children, they do learn to "listen" to you. I can tell my cat Rocky Road Stunts (my son named him and my son is only 4) "lets go and get something to eat", or"jump" and he will jump, I walk to my mom's house and he will follow like a dog and then I will tell him,Now, you stay here on the porch, and momma will be right out. He does. Yes, cats do understand if you talk to them ....No, I am not crazy

I love to talk to cats and they usually talk back to me, but I think usually there is not a definite understanding. I know my cats understand when I call them - they know their names, and when I ask one of my cats to sit she does. They may know more than I think, but I don't know.

Yes they do, They are just cats and want to act arrogant about understanding so they trip you up, a better question would be do we understand then when they talk to us?

I believe my cat can. I call his name and he comes to me. He knows when I'm upset or happy. I can tell by the way he acts. George (my cat) is wonderful. He is my confidant.
Also, One day a bat got into my house,,,He let me know that there was something wrong in the house. By racing back and forth and meow like crazy. He also saved my life....I had a gas leak in my kitchen. George when wild again.
He is my hero.

I say YES! Well... they know some commands/words. My cat knows his name, the words treat, come here, & bad. He also understands some hand signals.

But cats are somewhat snobby and like to respond when they feel like it, so they may know more than we think and just don't feel like answering/responding.

I don't know if they can understand everything we say, but I do know that my cats respond to their name and they also understand it when I say no to them if they are doing something wrong.

They may understand a few special words like 'food' and 'here', but mostly, they listen to the tone of your voice. They can read your emotions better than most people.
