Been there, and it can cause this uncomfortable silence between the two of u.
It's best to talk it over, just say that you're flattered that he finds you attractive & likes you for who you are. But you don't believe that you're ready for a relationship at the moment. Get to know him as friends as you are & if the more time you spend with him, you like him then it will happen. But if not, make it perfectly clear to him that you want to be friends. SO that means seeing each other not as much, cos the guy might fall for you more.
A lil confusing, but I think you get the point.
Best of luck

If you are really good friends and do not want a closer type of relationship, just tell him that you feel more like his sister than a potential date partner and that friendship is really all you have to offer him. Let him decide where he wants to go from there and if he chooses to give up a good friend, then he was never your friend to begin with and you won't be the one that ended it.

you need to be honest with him, if you not, you re giving him false hope! which will ultimately ruin your friendship. Tell him that you cannot be with him because you do not feel the same way but do remind him that you value your friendship and do not want to do anything to jeopardise this. He will be hurt, but not as much as leading him on... i wont lie, he may keep his distance when you do tell him, depends on how much he likes you, some people just cant bare to be around others because they want so much more and that's hard! being a true friend is telling them the truth, just be suttle... good luck x

don't do anything you can't be sure about.. if he's your good friend and you like him "only" as friend, let it be on that way... if he asks you for going out or something like that... just say that you're not interested in him, but would like still be his friend.. he'll get over it...
I've been in the same kind of a situation and I got over it quite quickly.. actually I'm glad that he said "no"... :)
Good luck!

Its not worth losing a friendship over something that probably wont work anyway. Tell him how you feel, and that you wana stay friends.

is there a chance that you'll like him more once you're going out
i was in that situation with a girl i'd known for years but i acted dumb after she'd made it clear she wanted more & we ended up drifting & her not being happy with me in the end... so ... you decide

you answer your own question, "but i don't really like him", so it's simply DON'T GO OUT WITH HIM.
sorry for shouting, but why would you go out with someone you don't like?
stay friends, don't go out, and live a happy life with someone you do like.
