Like, where in Europe your ancestors were from? I can trace my lineage as far back as the late 13th C in Britain, but I know I have ancestors from other parts of Western Europe...

Angela M,
I just edited my response because I read the person above, and he is right. You learn something every day. Follow his link.

I maintain that if you have a near relative that has been tested, and you get permission to see their results, in one of the other projects, then you have it for free also.

You can look at the DNA sites, to see if you can find the surname you are looking for, then write to see how you can get a look at the results.

If you are looking for a general idea, one of the human genetics projects may do it for free and send you some results. They would tell you, for instance, that half of your ancestral band turned right to become Turks and half left to become Celts, sometime between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago.

The other kind costs money - $300 US for the one I did. They then match your DNA with others. If you match on all 37 points, it means you and the other person have a common ancestor 200 to 250 years ago.

Visit the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation website at http://www.smgf.org/ . The analysis is free. In fact, the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation actually conducts the tests that many people pay for through some other organizations that charge for the service.

Try the Genome Project. I think it costs big money. On line.

I would inquire at your local University or College. They likely have students who need to do this anyway. Hope this helps.

alot of sites offer free testing to see if you are kin to them but you have to pay for the results to help them pay for the cost of the tests. you can buy some tests but they are high.

It wouldn't do you any good unless you had something to compare it to.
