yes it is a sin. the proper term it is unclean. that is why if a male or female does masturbate they cannot touch another person i believe it was for a day. due to the germs of the bodily fluids.
also, there are other reasons why the bible states that, one is because it is addictive habit. usually a person masturbates because one cannot deal with a certain problem, it is a temporary relief.

Oh,you look it up lazy.No it wasn't because Onan spilled his "Seed" on the ground that God killed him.It was because he was supposed to get Tamar pregnant,to carry on the Messianic line.(Genesis 38 :8-10). Somewhere in Leviticus it says,'That if a man spills his seed he's to wash up and stay away from others until evening'(I guess that's a morning whanker)It doesn't sound like a major big deal.
