Was reading romance novels...like Silhouette or Harlequin, would you allow her to continue reading them? I saw an article about this topic in Dear Abby, and a woman was concerned about her 14 year old reading these things. Abby said she used to read things like that when she was a child as well, and she turned out just fine. Speaking for myself, my mom is an avid romance story reader, and has a ton of them in her book case at home. I've been reading them since I was around 15, and it in no way increased my desire to go out and have sex....just amused and entertained me more. Actually, when I think back on it, I wasn't even reading them for the sexual encounters, I really was reading them for the romantic situations. Reading them didn't make me want to have sex, just made me want to find a boyfriend that would "sweep me away" like the women in those books. I hid it from mom for awhile but she found out eventually. lol Would you allow your daughter to read these types of books?

I read that article too! And I have to completely 100% agree with both Abby and you. I read romance novels since I was 13. My mom had them all over the house. They didn't make me a wild sexual being. I just liked slipping into that world of romance and love.... not the sex stuff. Most the time, I just giggled and skimmed past the sexual stuff. I definitly would let my daughter read those types of books when she becomes a teenager if thats what she wanted to read. No harm was done to me from reading those books.

Yes i would. I don't see any problem with it. I started reading them when i was around 13-14, my mom got me hooked on them. I would just let my daughter know that their are other interesting books out their. And also that the "great" sexual situations portrayed in the romance novels don't really happen like that. Good Question.

At 14 this age is fine. I was reading them at that age. My aunt and I use to trade romance novels to read. They are not as bad as some of the books they have out now.

I think so. Seems to be innocent enough. But I would tell your daughter about sex, would tell her what could be the end results to having sex and ask her to wait or to use appropriate birth control at minimum so that she is well informed. You sound smart, like you have already done this and I do not think that your daughter is necessarily reading these romance novels for the sexual content.

It's fine for her to read romantic novels. Encourage her and don't read anything more into it. She's going to have 'sweep me away" thoughts with or without the books. The example you set for her on how to communicate with men is important and that should be on your checklist of what she needs too.

Best wishes,

pup

Oh yes, I think they are silly but harmless. It is perfectly natural for her to be reading them. I would be more worried if she were reading Nietsche at that age, or Mein Kampf etc.

On the other hand, if that is ALL she is reading you might want to give her a nudge towards something more adult in case her brain rots away, but as long as they are just a part of her reading I shouldn't worry at all.

As long as your daughter is about that age, It shouldn't be a big deal. I have read them for years and they are not racy.
