Recently Francis M. Fesmire of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine as well as Majed Odeh of Bnai Zion Medical Centre of Haifa, Israel reported on successfully treating intractable hiccups by use of digital rectal massage. Has anyone attempted this therapy. What degree of success did you have?

Intractable hiccups should be thoroughly worked up for a mediastinal lesion irritating the phrenic nerve. The only value I can see in rectal massage would stem from distraction, same as my parents used to do by startling or scaring hiccups out of me.

But this reminds me of the story of Bob, the anal fissue. Read this and see if you think it has any medical value.

Rectal WHAT???? seems like that would give the hiccups ,do not know how this would work. I hold my breath for about 15 seconds and they go away most of the time-- I rather be purple than have a "rectal" massage-- But then --What ever turns ya on baby!!!

I read about this in the newspaper. It said that the doctor wrote the paper on this back in the 90's, I believe. This was something he only used once on one patient, and said in the newpaper article that he would never use it again.

He also said that he has written several other more important research papers since then, and hopes that he doesn't become known only for this rectal thing.

I think you would have better luck massaging your eye sockets. The vagus nerve does not extend all the way down to your anus. I may not be a doctor, but i can not see a connection here. sounds to me lie a joke perhaps created in San Francisco. It may not cure hiccups, but for some people, who cares.

As for me, I'll take a teaspoon full of sugar and hiccups will stop immediately.
