Unfortunately the only thing that helps is a good pair of flip-flops.
This happened to me and nothing helps ease the pain in the first couple of weeks, until the nail starts to regenerate.

Take some over the counter pain meds like tylenol or advil. Keep the foot elevated so that the pressure of fluids doesn't increase the pain.
Did the doctor not give you instructions when he removed it?

Try some ice packs over the bandage to numb the area.

There's a product called "second skin" (available in drugstores). It covers the open wound yet allows breathing of the skin. Use this for a few days and then cover it w/regular bandages after applying anti-fungal (esp. if it was removed due to fungal infection) and antibiotic cream to prevent bacterial infection. The skin will toughen after awhile and the nail will start to grow back.
