This guy acts like he is the boss of the entire geek squad at our best buy store, but he is not even an official senior. He constantly asks me to do things, when he is not busy himself. He is not any higher of a level than I, he is just much older. I am 24, he is 43. We do have an official senior in our department that is good friends with him, but do I need to take orders from this guy?

I guess he "used to be a senior" so he is some sort of unnofficial senior now.

Sounds like it's probably best to act like he is senior to you, especially if the rest of the staff do. I'm not saying you should suck up to him but unless you get a counter-command from the 'official senior' you can't really tell him where to get off. It depends how much you need your job - and maybe promotion.

You don't technically have to listen to him, but since he has been there longer, the boss will most likely listen to him. Usually in businesses though, people with more experience are looked at as "seniors" since they know the job better and usually help train other people. I have been in that position before, I had more authority over other people even though I did not have the authority to make serious decisions, I had to go to the boss for that. Besides, you are suppost to respect your elders, and learn from them.

If this is making you uncomfortable, ask your supervisor if you can speak with him and tell him that if bothers you and you just wanted to know if you had to follow his orders even though he is not too busy to do what he's asking for himself. Good luck.

You could bring this up with a manager or contact your HR dept. if you feel he is pushing work on you that he should be responsible for. Do your best to get along with him, he may end up being an official senior. Also since he is friends with one, he could make things at work difficult for you.

Talk to your manager. Nobody who doesn't work there knows what the rules and regulations are where you work. Good luck, though. He sounds like a jerk.
