Should I join the gym in town and...
pay $34 a month. I have been kinda broke - looking for a job again. (bad economic climate here in Michigan).. But I really want to get in shape and workout because me and my fiance are getting married in 9 mons and I want to look as good as I can. I'm in my 30s and a little flabby -need to tighten things up here...Also I've been kinda depressed about my job hunt and I think it might help me get out of my down mood too - give me some self confidence... My fiance says I shouldn't join until I have a steady job... He has been supporting us and helping out alot. What should I do?

Hang in there Michigan Girl. I know things are tough. If you have the discipline to go to the gym…then you’re definitely worth it. If you’re doing this to get things to turn around in your life, that’s a real good way to start. If your choice is to go to the gym or lay around watching HBO, then think about you self esteem when you add another 20 pounds. So I say go for it, but you got to follow through with your end and have the commitment to go the gym and put your sweat on. Trust me…you follow through the other things like your job and marriage will get on track too.

I totally understand. When you have a little spare time on your hands you think about all the things you could be doing. While a gym is a load of fun and all that equipment at your fingertips, since you are not paying for it, the payer should decide, and he seems to say no. Factor in the transport fares to and fro and it gets pricier. My suggestion would be to look for an activity that doesn't cost much. Running clubs ar often free so if you have a pair of shoes and a sports bra you are good to go. Getting out and doing something that isn't going to put a strain on your fiance's budget is probably best for your relationship. You could also buy some free weights, often available used on craigslist, and follow a program that is in a $4 magazine, a $7 DVD or online. To just tone up you could probably get away with a $30 set of dumbells with 40lbs. If you stick with a program you will see results. Don't miss a beat and mix it up a little with some running or biking or just walking (I know Michigan can get cold, so get out there now). Hope this helps

Can you join month to month until a good deal comes up? I was month to month at mine for 2 months and then they had "buy 6 months, get 6 free" so I signed up for that. You had to pay it all at once but it was much cheaper than the rate I was paying.
And yes, join, even if it's month to month for now. Don't think about the wedding, do it because regular exercise will boost your mood and help you weather the emotional ups and downs of a job hunt. Good luck! Oh, and month to month until you find a job in case your job isn't convenient to the gym. You might want to change gyms to something more convenient to a work location so keep that in mind before signing up for any long term committment.

By all means join. Physical activity can help with the blues. If you have to pay to exercise you tend to go to the gym to get you moneys worth. And if you think you look good you will feel better about yourself. Let's face it as far as the job hunt goes, as bad as this sounds, the better looking and in shape you are in, the better the odds for a job.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was thinking about the same thing, because when you workout at a gym, there's that competition thing, and then there the " I payed for it, I better look good!!"
I am getting alittle wiggle too, It's time!!
When I told my husband I wanted to join a Kickboxing class, or a Yoga class, he said no, you should work out at home, but how boring is that???????????????
I love fall, and every fall, I go walking, usually with my golden retriever, and best friend , and usually at night, I love my local historical village,
You know what? I think it's time we do something about it, NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!! LETS JUST DO IT, even if it means not listening to our men, lets join a gym and start loving ourselves, and treating our body's right, instead of moping around hoping one day that we will look like Paris Hilton...............................................

go to your local YMCA that offers a fitness program..most of the Y's in California offer financial ad..take advantage of it...it can lower the monthly dues considerably...most likely the ones in Michigan will do the same thing...maybe you can volunteer some time to help them in return...good luck w/your job search
