Hello Niall,

Don't worry it may be piles or an anal fissure both can be a little painful and or uncomfortable but relatively harmless and are easy to treat. You may have just strained really hard while defecating and burst a small blood vessel. I'd go to your GP just so that you know what it is the cause.

I don't know all of them, but I do know that the most common reason for blood in the stool is a stomach ulcer.... Go to the doctor!

Before you check with a doctor check what you have been eating. If you have eaten beetroot or a lot of tomatoes or some other highly coloured food it can look like blood in your stools.

That is one of the indicators of problems with the intestines, including bowel cancer, so I agree with the answerer who said to see a doc. Good luck.
