To tell you the truth, both, grades and SAT test score are important. This is because the grades determine if you will get accepted into a good college. SAT's determine if you will get accepted into a college too. Collehes want students who have a high GPA and SAT score, so work hard and never give up =]

Grades! SAT tests only show your ability of guessing the right answer out of a number of choices. Grades reflect a number of activities. You can be graded on your participation in a group discussion or on an essay or a verbal test. There are books to teach you how to pass the SAT, but I think grades reflect how well you really understand a subject not how well you know how to pass a test.

The first answer is a good one, but here's my two cents:

Your focus is all wrong. The grades and the SAT scores are both supposed to be evidence of your ability to comprehend what you read, think about it critically, and communicate your findings. (This holds true for math problems, too: If you misread the problem, you're hosed. If you can't think through it, you're hosed. If you can't explain your answer, it looks like you're a lucky guesser or you cheated.)

Hence, the most important things are those three skills. Worry about those, instead of about the symptoms (the scores and grades). Focus on problem solving, reading comprehension, and writing/speaking.

If you nail those skills, not only will your grades and scores reflect it, so will your admissions essay and letters of recommendation.

Grades! If you have good SAT scores but bad grades, the colleges will think that you don't try very hard in your classes - nobody likes a slacker. If you have good grades but bad SAT scores, they will think that you try very hard, but you just aren't good at standardized test.

Answer is.....BOTH.

I know what you're getting at, though. I suggest you definitely worry about ACT and SAT scores, though. For example......I have good students not take my physics classes because they're afraid they're going to screw up their perfect 4.0 GPA's. But.....if they got a "B" in my class but gained some skills that let them increase their ACT score by 1 point, they're WAY better off. So.....BOTH are important, but students usually overestimate the weight that colleges put on grades and underestimate the weight that colleges put on standardized test scores.

Sat's are meaningless. If you don't get in in Sept. You can pick where you want to go in January. During the fall everyone wants in but from Sept to Jan, 1/2 don't make it. They have to fill those seats.

kris is right. your transcript is by far the most important part of your application, followed by test scores, essays, and recommendations.
